The Unification of Piston Engines of Road Building, Farm, and Transportation Machinery

The problem of the unification or standardization of engines used in road building, farm, and transportation machinery is examined from the standpoint of efficiency, economy, and power requirements. The existing 150 or so different makes of engines now used for the above purposes can be minimized to a very few, possibly four basic standard engines satisfying the 50 - 1000 hp range through standardization, which should be based on a diesel engine which satisfies the three basic rating parameters--efficiency, power output, and durability. The two basic stages of engine standardization are discussed. (Author)
