Sludging Tendencies of Military and Commercial Engine Lubricants Uder Stop-And-Go and Over-The-Road Service Conditions

A field study of four oils in stop-and-go and over-the-road service was conducted. Forty commercial, gasoline-powered vehicles of three manufacturers with models ranging from 1962 to 1966 comprised the fleet. The low temperature sludging tendencies of three military specification oils were investigated by comparison with a commercial engine oil. The basic objective was to compare the deposits resulting from oils and operating conditions. These data consist mainly of engine sludge ratings and oil screen clogging tendencies. PCV systems are discussed only to the extent of showing the effects of oil quality level on valve filling.
