Thermal Stabilities of Tetranitrobiphenyl Isomers at Elevated Temperatures

Rates of thermal decompositions for six isomeric tetranitrobiphenyls were measured at 260C and 280C by analysis of undecomposed tetranitrobiphenyl. At 260C, the sterically crowded, 2,2', 6,6'-, 2,2', 4,4'- and 2',2,4,6-tetranitrobiphenyls decomposed at the rate of 1.6 plus or minus 0.5% hour, about ten times faster than the relatively uncrowded 3,3',5,5'-, 4',2,4, 6-, and 3',2,4,6-tetranitrobiphenyls. The gaseous products formed during 1-3% decomposition were found to be NO2, N2, NO, and H2O. Evidence is presented for the homolytic cleavage of C-NO2 bonds as a first step in decomposition.
