Both the mossy fibre (MF) and climbing fibre (CF) fields evoked on either the pars intermedia or the vermis of the lobus anterior by stimulation of the sensorimotor cortex are mediated by the pyramidal tract, at least up the the mesencephalic level. The somatotopic arrangement of the MF and CF responses evoked in the lobus anterior from the forelimb and hindlimb areas of the sensorimotor cortex described in intact cat under Nembural anaesthesia, is present in the 'pyramidal' cat. Following unilateral section of the restiform body almost all the CF fields evoked on the lobus anterior from the sensorimotor cortex disappear on the ipsilateral side; small CF fields remain particularly in the vermis. The shortest CF responses evoked on lobulus H IV from the white matter underlying the sensorimotor cortex are 9.5-10 msec over a distance of 58 mm. The shortest MF responses in the granular layer are 1.6-1.7 msec. These latter values are attributable to the cortico-ponto-cerebellar path. (Author)
