New Analog Computing Elements Made of Fused Microconductors in Glass Insulation

摘要

The application of new fused microconductors for analog computations and other purposes is discussed. The conducting elements are precipitated out of the liquid phase in glass, using a method ascribed to A. V. Ulitovskiy which yields element diameters on the order of a few microns. The SES series of resistive arrays, based on this technique, have been tested in a-d and d-a converters, digital voltmeters, and several arithmetic operations. In addition to the small size, the elements are noted for their good aging stability and low temperature drift. Another application uses twisted pairs of the elements as bolometers to do algebraic operations such as extracting roots or raising to a power.
