Manufacturing Process for Large Sheets of Transparent Single Crystal Aluminum Oxide for the Czochralski Method

摘要

The Czochralski technique has been developed for growth of single Al2O3 in plate form for transparent armor application. A description of the growth process is given along with the development work carried out prior to issuance of the contract. Scale-up has been carried out to produce a single crystal plate with dimensions in the as-grown state of 4 inches x 6 inches x 3/8 inches thick. The problems of furnace design and power control for the larger size growth unit is described along with a preliminary amount of the optical quality. (Author)
