The pair distribution function for dense random packing of hard spheres is very similar to that observed for non-crystalline Ni-P alloys. The hard sphere model distribution function has a split second peak; this splitting is a characteristic structural feature of most non-crystalline metallic alloys. The positions of the maxima in the hard sphere distribution function agree with those observed for noncrystalline Ni-P alloys when 2.42 A is taken for the hard sphere diameter in the Ni-P structure. The dense random packing of hard spheres also appears to be a promising structural model for other non-crystalline metallic solids. (Author)
