Clinical Suction Systems Requirements in Aeromedical Evacuation

The USAF requirements for clinical suction systems are evaluated, with particular emphasis being placed on aeromedical evacuation and, to a lesser extent, on the needs of ground-based field treatment facilities--especially of casualty staging facilities. The report includes: a background review of certain fundamental physical principles; a summary of the main performance criteria which must be satisfied to meet general clinical suction requirements; a discussion of the major special requirements which must be satisfied by a system to be used for in-flight therapy; the results of a survey performed as part of this study to determine types and frequency of systems now in use in USAF aeromedical evacuation squadrons; and, finally, the results of the test and evaluation of certain commercial systems under simulated in-flight conditions.
