A New Method for Determining Procurement Quantities for Naval Aircraft Ground Support Equipment

The report considers the problem of maintaining an adequate inventory of Naval aircraft ground support equipment. The work presented in this report was done for the Aviation Supply Office. The problem is defined and an analytical model is presented which describes the important elements of the inventory problem. The elements included are equipment breakdown, equipment repair, ordering with long delivery lead times, and statistical estimation of system characteristic parameters. A procedure is presented which yields the minimum cost procurement to insure a prescribed level of protection against shortages. The management decision variables in this procedure are the minimum field requirements and the level of protection. An approximation to the exact procedure is also presented. The behavior of the new procedure is illustrated and examined. Some sensitivity analyses are given. The procedure is compared with existing procurement procedures. The data requirements are examined to determine the source of each data element and to determine data availability. Several programs for implementing the procedure are presented. (Author)
