Evaluation of an Acrylic Coating for Self-Luminous Paint

This report covers an investigation of the sealing and optical properties of an acrylic lacquer when applied to lensatic compasses to protect the tritiated paint. This lacquer conforms to the revised specification for the compass. The brightness of each compass bowl was measured before testing. The bowls were then coated with the lacquer in varying concentrations and thicknesses. After the application of each coat, the compasses were tested for brightness retention and tritium leakage of the lacquered area. From these tests, the optimum number of coats and concentration of the lacquer were determined. (Author)
