Improved Apparatus for Temperature-Controlled Perfusion of Isolated Hearts

An apparatus is described for the study of the effects of temperature and drugs on the isolated perfused heart preparation. It is constructed almost completely of glass, it is modular in design, and allows for precise and rapidly variable temperature control. Drugs may be tested on the heart preparation in precisely controlled concentrations. EKG data from an isolated perfused heart of the hibernator (Citellus mexicanus, a ground squirrel) are presented to demonstrate the utility of the apparatus. Further applications of the apparatus are briefly discussed. (Author)
