Memoryless nonlinear devices are investigated whose transfer characteristics can be approximated by a generalized hypergeometric function (in this report designated GHF) or by a polynomial. They are fed by a sinusoidal signal plus narrow-band Gaussian noise and their output signal-to-noise ratio R, in the mth harmonic zone, is derived as a function of their input signal-to-noise ratio rho and in terms of the parameters of the GHF or in terms of the coefficients of the polynomial. As an example, an error-function limiter is included. The limiter's R as a function of rho is easily obtained. Approximations of R for small and large rho are also given for this limiter and for polynomial devices. In addition, the output correlation function is obtained for odd nonlinearities with GHF or polynomial transfer characteristics when their inputs consist of Gaussian noise alone. Several examples of GHF devices are included whose correlation function reduces to a closed-form expression. (Author)
