The SHIRAN electronic DME subsystem of the AN/USQ-28 System was evaluated using advanced data reduction techniques which consist of determining, as part of the least squares adjustment of the range measurements, the biases inherent in the range measurements as well as the aircraft and ground station coordinates. The biases are related to transponder delay, phase measuring error, residual refraction effects, etc. The techniques exploit the observational redundancy resulting from the SHIRAN System's high data rate and capability of interrogating up to four ground transponders simultaneously. The tests indicate that while significant biases are present in the range measurements, the biases may be precisely recovered and that the errors are considerably less than the minimum allowable specified for the system if the techniques described in the report are used to reduce the data.
