SINGLE IMPACT STUDIES OF RAIN EROSIONnPART I. PRELIMINARY EVALUATION

Techniques of high speed photography, photomicrography and profilometry have been applied to the study of single impacts of waterdrops with fast-moving surfaces.nVarious features of the collision process are described including pressure build-up, radial velocity, flow separation and obliquity of surface. Interpretations are given of the damage sites and of their possible correlation with multiple impact erosion.nPhotoelastic studies of impact indicate that pre-stressing of the target surface may occur before collision and the implications of this phenomenon for high altitude flight are discussed.
