摘要

A combined experimental and theoretical investigation of the response of reentry-vehicle-type shells subjected to symmetric and asymmetric transient surface loads was conducted. The principle objective of the study was to observe and analyze the modes of response and determine critical loads for damage. The loads were of durations ranging from a few microseconds to several milliseconds and included simulated shock-on-shock interaction loads. The influence of load symmetry, length-to-diameter ratio, cover thickness, and shell end conditions on buckling, cracking, and end shearing was examined in detail. (Author)
