Corrosion of Materials in Hydrospace-Part V-Aluminum Alloys

A total of 900 specimens of 40 different aluminum alloys were exposed at depths of 2,500 and 6,000 feet in the Pacific Ocean for periods of time varying from 123 to 1064 days in order to determine the effects of deep ocean environments on their corrosion resistance. Corrosion rates, types of corrosion, pit depths, stress corrosion cracking resistance, changes in mechanical properties and compositions of corrosion products are presented. (Author)
