A Time-Sharing Audio Visual Device

By combining the tasks of many users to provide a high volume of work for a computer system, the time-shared computer has made the use of computers by low volume users economically feasible. As a result many new applications for computers have developed. One such application is computer-aided instruction. As the interaction between computer and student must take place through the output terminal (i.e. it must be typed) there is a very real limit to the types of additional information the computer can supply. If the computer were able to activate audio and visual devices in addition to typing, its versatility as a teacher would be greatly increased. This paper is concerned with designing and building an audio-visual terminal device for time-sharing systems. The device resulting from the project consists essentially of a slide projector and a tape recorder connected to the teletype output terminal in such a way that the computer can dynamically select any of the content of either device for presentation.
