Linear FM Vertical Sounder for Ionospheric Distortion Correction

A linear FM vertical sounder has been designed and implemented in order to demonstrate the feasibility of real-time correction of ionospheric distortions. The system is monostatic, relying on chopping for transmitter/receiver isolation. All signal waveforms, local oscillator and correction signals are derived from a specially-modified, programmed Hewlett Packard frequency synthesizer. Results indicate a capability of making real-time corrections over bandwidths of up to 900 kHz and time periods of several seconds. (Author)
