摘要

A program was initiated to define the mechanical shear stability of polymer-thickened lubricating oils in terms of a laboratory bench-scale technique. In subsequent evaluation studies using standard laboratory-type paint blending/mixing devices, a 'kinetic dispersion mill' was found to induce shear degradation of polymer thickeners in multi-grade engine oils. Further refinement of this technique led to the establishing of a satisfactory correlation with single and multicylinder engine tests. (Author)
