Response of an Elastic Half Space to an Expanding Ring of Surface Pressure

The paper gives the derivation of an exact solution for the problem of an elastic half space when the surface is excited by an expanding, concentrated ring of pressure. A number of finite-difference codes exist for computer use in the study of ground motions due to surface or near-surface blasts. The use of different codes can result in different solutions to the same physical problem, such as the effect of ground shock on underground structures. This work contributes to the numerical accuracy of such codes by obtaining an exact solution for a simulated ground-shock problem. A method is developed for obtaining the displacements due to an expanding distributed surface load by superposing ring load solutions. The case of a decaying pressure profile is used as an example.
