On the Relation Between Bulk and Shearing Plastic Deformations and Shock Waves in Soft Soils

Although studies of mathematic models used for the analysis of plastic waves in soft soil assume that volume and shear deformations are independent of each other, the author cites evidence to show that there is a connection between the two. This evidence was obtained from experiments performed to determine soil dilatation characteristics. In these experiments, a cylindrical specimen of the medium is subjected to hydrostatic pressure; then, with the radial stress kept constant, the axial stress is gradually increased and the axial and volume deformations measured. These experiments were done on media of sand and lead shot. (Author)
