On the Design of an Instrument to Use Forward-Scattered Light to Detect Small Particles

The response of an instrument using forward scattered light to detect small particles is studied. The parameters considered include the size and optical properties of the particle, the speed of the particle relative to the instrument, the spectral intensity of the light source, the spectral quantum efficiency of the photosensitive detector, and those of the light collecting arrangement.
