The remote sensing of smokestack gases in the infrared region is discussed. A newly developed infrared correlation method can be used to overcome the difficulties imposed by the spectral overalp of the different gases in the smokestack as well as in the atmosphere. lab¬oratory measurements with SO2 show promising results. In the field, the self-emission of the atmosphere and the temperature of the smoke¬stack gases must be measured separately. The advantages of the pro¬posed method are: As a passive system, the complexity is low;using the infrared emission, day and night observation is possible and the correlation method minimizes spectral interference and allows real time data interpretation.
