An instrumented impact machine was utilized to evaluate the toughness of materials both in the as received and heat treated conditions. A correlation existed between portions of the oscilloscope traces obtained from Charpy v-notched impact specimens and standard tensile threaded specimens with regard to mechanical properties such as ultimate tensile load and % elongation in 1 inch. In addition, with an additional modification of the instrumented impact machine a correlation was shown to exist between the oscilloscope traces of v-notched tensile impact specimens and v-notched tensile threaded specimens with regard to ultimate tensile loads. The time response to fracture of ferrous materials should be included in evaluating the toughness of materials and should be considered before recommending ferrous materials for critical utilization. As an alternative one may employ the complete stress-strain curve. (Author)
