In synthesizing relay systems, trial of many versions is unavoidable; hence, the desirability for automating the solution of logic problems included in the synthesis. The LYAPAS ('logical language for presentation of synthesis algorithms') language was specially developed for this task. The new language and its accompanying programming system were developed and optimized jointly. Compactness of algorithm presentation, proximity to publication language, maximum use of features of modern general-purpose digital computers, and simplicity of translation into machine languages were the objectives. The language has two levels which differ in quality. The first level is closer to the languages of modern general-purpose computers. At this level, intended for fine structure of algorithms, programs can be set up which are equivalent to 200-300 machine instructions. The second level is intended for presentation of complicated hierarchic-structure programs involving an expandable set of operators and a set of routines. The second-level programs have a much larger capacity than the first-level ones.
