The steady state amplitude and frequency response for the vortex-induced transverse vibrations of a circular cylinder mounted on linear springs in a steady fluid stream was considered. The tests were conducted in water and the range of variations were: aspect ratio 16.5 to 29.9; the ratio of cylinder density to fluid density 0.718 to 8.67; Reynolds number: 1727 to 4317. The nondimensional frequency response was found to be a strong function of the cylinder-to-fluid density ratio. The nondimensional frequency response was found to be a strong function of the cylinder-to-fluid density ratio. The nondimensional amplitude response was found to be a function of cylinder-to-fluid density ratio, Reynolds number, and the dimensionless ratio of the free stream velocity divided by the product of natural frequency and cylinder diameter. The maximum nondimensional amplitude response was analyzed for the form of dependency and empirical equations were developed. (Author)
