Evaluating Quaking Aspen of Wisconsin for a Site-Quality to Wood-Quality Relationship

The objective was to determine whether a relationship could be found between site quality and specific gravity of quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) growing in Wisconsin. This type of relationship offered the possibility that site quality-yield estimates could be adjusted to indicate not only potential volume yield of aspen, but more importantly, pulp yield. Specific gravities were determined from increment cores extracted from 185 trees at 23 sample sites. Regression analysis showed no consistent relationship between specific gravity and site quality. The forest manager can apparently concentrate on volume production of quaking aspen in Wisconsin without concern that variation in specific gravity associated with site quality will influence the yield of the fiber produced.
