A Multiple Collision Method of Measuring Sticking Coefficients

A new method of measuring sticking coefficients using multiple surface collisions of vapor is presented. Metal vapors pass from a cup into a long, hollow, right cylindrical tube where they come to rest after one or more collisions on the inner surface of the tube. The distribution of the condensed vapors on the inner surface is then analytically measured and analysis of the distribution is made by applying Monte Carlo calculational techniques to the behavior of atoms in a tube (similar to the experimental array) and making various assumptions regarding sticking coefficients and types of reflections. Some of the problems concerned with the elucidation of the variables in sticking coefficient measurements and the attainment of meaningful equilibrium oxide surfaces under ordinary vacuum conditions are discussed.
