A New Filler Wire for the Inert-Gas Welding of Gunmetal and Dis-Similar Metals

Advances in gas shielded arc techniques, together with cast alloy development has encouraged a re-appraisal by M.O.D.(N) of the approach to gunmetal welding, and an improved filler wire was developed. The ccomposition is based on work by the Canadian Department of Mines and Technical Surveys which led to the issue of Canadian Patent No.746.847 covering a phosphor bronze filler, to which silicon additions were made to assist in deoxidation of the weld pool and stabilization of the arc. The M.O.D.(N) project resulted in a nickel addition to the alloy which largely overcomes the weakening effect of grain boundary lead segregates by promoting globular dispersion, whilst achieving grain refinement, virtual freedom from porosity and overmatching strength. The composition of the wire which has a registered trade name 'PHOSNIC' is given, together with two other wires which are considered for gunmetal welding. (Author)
