Laminar composites were fabricated by diffusion bonding boron carbide coated titanium foil sheets with individual layer thicknesses varying in the range 2-25 um. The mechanical properties varied with boron carbide content. At 42 pct. BC reinforcement, the biaxial, planar tensile strength and elastic modulus was 105 ksi, and 35.1 x 10 to the 6th psi, respectively. For laminates bonded above 850C, a brittle reaction phase zone was formed. Fracture crack patterns were observed to extend along the reaction phase boundary. Interlaminar shear strength values of 4000-5800 psi can be attributed to brittle phase formation. (Author)
