THE THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY OF EUROPIUM SULFIDE ACROSS THE CURIE TEMPERATURE.

The thermal conductivity of a polycrystalline sample of EuS has been measured over the temperature range of 13.5 K to 17.6 K. This range includes the Curie temperature of 16.4 K. The linear absolute method was employed. There was no apparent anomalous behavior for the experimental thermal conductivity in the vicinity of the Curie temperature such as has been observed in EuO and a number of other magnetic materials. The possibility of observing an anomaly in the conductivity near the magnetic transition temperature due to critical phonon-magnon scattering has evidently been masked by the large phonon-dislocation scattering.
