Factors Affecting Bullet Impact Initiation of Pyrotechnic Compositions

Three possible modes of initiation by bullet impact of a typical magnesium, sodium nitrate, binder illuminating system are considered. Of the three--mechanical activation, adiabatic compression, and friction--friction appears to be the dominant factor in initiation of this composition by bullet impact. A demonstrated 'cure' is also cited. (Author)
