The Use of a Magnetic Field to Measure Particle Velocity. I. Basic Concepts and Exploratory Experiments

Some of the initial effort of Group GMX-6, Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory, in using magnetic fields to measure particle velocities is described. Two types of probes, the U-probe (or Zavoiskii technique) and an axially symmetric probe, are discussed. Some of the preliminary results indicating the possibilities of the techniques are presented and directions for future work are indicated. (Author)
