Uranyl Nitrate Inhibition of Transport Systems In Saccharomyces Cerevisiiae

The object of the research was to substantiate an inconsistency in the action of uranyl ions as reported in the literature with that noted in studies of cell membranes for changes caused by elevated temperatures. Radioactivity counts of the carbon-14 content of cells in a solution of a 14C-labeled compound were used to assay the entry of compounds into cells and the effects of uranyl ions on entry. Uranyl nitrate inhibited the transport of several amino acids, a vitamin, and a disaccharide into yeast. (Author)
