Testing for Virulence of Neisseria Meningitidis in Primates and Other Laboratory Mammals

Human volunteer studies in meningococcal vaccine are summarized. From these results one may conclude: One must give at least 35 micrograms of meningococcal A, B, and C antigen in one dose--both HA and Bactericidal antibodies are produced; The number of volunteers were not sufficient in size to justify definitive conclusions; The three vaccines employed gave measurable antibody responses. There were no reactions in the 97 volunteers worthy of record. No elevation of temperature at 24, 48, and 72 hours was noted after inoculations were encountered. One volunteer had slight erythema but no induration.
