The basic concepts of sampling, quantizing, and digitizing voice signals are developed. The characteristics of transforms and their desirable attributes are discussed. The waveform processing operations most applicable for preserving the properties of voice while reducing bandwidth are assessed. Present and past speech processing techniques are reviewed.
