The body of information presented in this paper is directed to those in¬dividuals concerned with the effects of fuel composition and additives upon emissions from oil-fired combustion sources. An investigation of the relationship of fuel additive technology and fuel composition to air pollution control is presently under way at NAPCA. At this point in the study, a standard screening procedure has been established for testing additives in a distillate-oil-fired test furnace. The test system has been constructed, and an operational baseline established. Emis¬sions measured are carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, oxygen, unburned hydrocarbons, oxides of sulfur, oxides of nitrogen, and carbon partic¬ulate. The available literature on fuel additives has been surveyed, and samples of all known fuel oil additives have been obtained.
