This article presents the results of an analysis of a uniform Z-propagating piezoelectric surface wave upon a y-cut LiNbo3 substrate. Two cases are treated:an infinite plane interface between the substrate and free space, and a lightly metallized surface where inertial loading and stiffness of the metal film are neglected. The analysis is patterned after a procedure that is treated in detail by Tseng and White. Its salient features are that it utilizes the complete set of Maxwell equations, as opposed to the quasi static approximation, and that numerical analysis is required to evaluate the parameters of those particular solutions of the wave equations that satisfy the boundary conditions.
