SOME (FLUOROALKYL) AROMATIC SURFACTANT MATERIALS

This Report forms part of a continuing programme aimed at new useful polymeric materials. One aspect of this work has opened up a general method for the synthesis of fluoroalkyl-substituted aromatic compounds. Making use of this patented method, good synthetical routes have been established to polystyrenes containing long-chain fluoroalkyl groups, for example, poly[p-(perfluoroheptyl)styrene]. Syntheses for (perfluoroheptyl)-benzoic and benzenesulphonic acids have also been devised. The potential of these materials as surfactants is discussed: the fluoroalkyl-substituted poly¬styrenes did not show sufficiently low critical surface tensions to be of interest as surfactants for fabrics, while the benzoic and benzenesulphonic acids proved unpromising as surfactants for electroplating baths.
