The problem of determining the velocity distribution with respect to the altitude of a body falling free in the atmosphere from an altitude is considered. Expressions are derived for the velocity distribution and braking coefficient. Approximate methods for calculating velocity distribution are outlined for two cases when: (1) the wave drag coefficient is constant; and (2) the wave drag coefficient varies as a function of M and flight altitude. The cases of vertical and ballistic trajectories are considered. It is shown that beginning with the value of the braking coefficient the landing velocity depends weakly upon the initial conditions and is determined by the braking coefficient.
