Ti-Be Composites Produced by the Co-Extrusion of Powders

摘要

The results of the investigation demonstrate that a new family of Ti-Be co-extruded, powdered metal composites can be added to the inventory of high specific-strength/modulus, fracture-resistant materials used for weight-critical design applications. Preliminary experimental data have shown that these two highly reactive metals can be consolidated into a composite stable to 810K (1000F) with a microstructure that cannot be developed by conventional melting practices. Microprobe analysis and X-ray diffraction showed that no detrimental beryllides were formed during processing. Potentially, this new system could compare to the Al-50 v/o B composites. Currently, a composite with the modulus of steel and the density of Al is commercially available. (Author)
