The Use of Thermography in the Detection of Extracranial Carotid Arterial Insufficiency. Description of a Provocative Cooling Technique

The majority of strokes are due to occlusive lesions, most often in the extracranial carotid arterial system. A method is proposed in which a provocative cooling technique is employed utilizing time-sequenced thermograms of the supraorbital regions of the forehead in order to provide a functional test of internal carotid arterial blood flow. The thermographic procedure is presented as one of several atraumatic diagnostic modalities which are being adapted for performance by paramedical personnel in a specialized, semiautomated, screening, clinical laboratory environment using computer data processing.
