The research was concerned with the development of processing technology and engineering properties data on polyimide (PI) and diphenyl oxide (DPO) resin based glass reinforced composites both in the form of glass fabric reinforced laminates and filament wound systems. Work was geared toward fabrication methods which would be applicable to the manufacture of large,heat-resistant structures,and utilizing conventional manufacturing techniques. Various engineering properties are reported both as functions of temperature and time at temperature. Vacuum bagging at low temperatures (350F) followed by postcure to 600F yielded the best results for PI composites,although their void content could not be reduced to below 16-18%. DPO press cured laminates and vacuum bagged filament wound composites required extensive postcure schedules to 550F. A finish evaluation study showed no substantial improvement in elevated temperature resistance of either PI or DPO composites. Based on the data generated,the useful life of PI composites is at least 1000hours at 500F and 600F. DPO composites have a useful service life of at least 1000hours at 400F and 500F and 250hours at 600F. (Author)
