The Cost-Effectiveness of Natural and Synthetic Fiber Ropes in the Marine Environment

A necessary first step in a cost-effectiveness analysis of natural and synthetic fiber ropes is the determination of the sizes of ropes of different material for the same application. Several such substitution rules were considered, and a new one developed. All were included in the analysis of life-cycle costs. Quantitative service life data, obtained from major users of cordage in the marine environment, are reported. Effectiveness is related to service life. The cost-effectiveness of synthetic fiber ropes is then clearly demonstrated. (Author)
