BEST is a light, unarmored,self-propelled wheeled vehicle that can perform multiple construction operations. The basic vehicle consists of front and rear two-wheeled sections coupled to a functional center section. By changing or eliminating the center section,the tractor can be adapted to various jobs. Existing center sections include a grader,compactor,scraper,tanker/water distributor,and membrane layer. Additional center sections being developed are the side dumper and the asphalt distributor. Attachments to the basic vehicle consist of bulldozer blade,bucket loader,towing winch,recovery winch,and forklift. The BEST tractor and its components can be delivered in sections by helicopter and as a unit,consisting of both front and rear sections and any one center section,by cargo airplane.
