A System for Separating Objects from the Background in Automatic Picture Processing

A common problem in automatic picture processing is separating objects from other, partially occluding objects, and a cluttered background. The dissertation proposes a system, called the Figural Organizer, which performs such a separation by selecting reasonable parts of objects for processing by a recognizing device. No a priori knowledge of a scene is assumed. The operation of the Figural Organizer is fully defined and computer simulated. A list of tactics is developed for positioning the center of attention of the system and controlling the parameters of the Figural Organizer. As a demonstration of the system's ability, a noisy scene containing many partially overlapping objects is analyzed. (Author)
