Crack Growth Resistance in Laminated, Glass-Epoxy Sheet

The application of the concepts of linear, elastic fracture mechanics to multi-directional, laminated glass-epoxy composite material is investigated. Center notched panels having filament orientations of 0 degrees and plus or minus 60 degrees are loaded in tension normal to the notch direction. Extensive stable crack growth is obtained prior to fracture. Crack extension and applied load are simultaneously measured using a motion picture camera. The instantaneous stress intensity factor is calculated using theory developed for isotropic materials, and is plotted against crack extension to obtain crack growth resistance or 'R' curves.
