A comparison is made of vacuum deoxidized and vacuum degassed steel forgings used in 175mm M113A1 gun tubes. It is shown that the reduced silicon content (.02% vs. .40%) causes a slight reduction in temperability. When compared at constant yield strength, the vacuum deoxidized steel shows a higher tensile ductility (%RA) and dynamic toughness. However, the materials are similar when compared on the basis of static toughness. An attempt is made to relate these observations to the difference in inclusion count. (Author)
