Use of Edit Information to Measure and Reduce File Error Content in a MIS

New data, before becoming part of a Management Information System (MIS), is usually subject to an editing procedure. During this procedure the new information is checked for such things as proper format, valid entries, omissions, correct logical relationships, and compatibility with data currently in the system. Over a span of time the results from the edit form a sample which provides information on input error rate, the MIS master file error content, and the edit's effectiveness. This report discusses the information which should be retained from the edit procedure and the statistical estimates that can be used to measure the error rates of interest using this data. Methods to increase the efficiency of existing edit procedures are also discussed. (Author)
