Charged particles can become trapped; i.e., their trajectories can be bounded in periodic, three-dimensional, rotationally symmetric, quadrupole electric fields. This trapping can be made mass selective by the proper application of ac and dc driving voltages. This mode of ion trapping is the basis of a sensitive mass spectrometer called a three-dimensional quadrupolar mass analyzer (3DQ). This report describes the basic physical principles underlying the operation of the 3DQ mass analyzer and indicates some of its attractive features as a possible detection device for trace gases in the atmosphere.
